Thief Winos continued our undefeated season with a hard-fought 14-12 slugfest over the defending champs Blatz Bombers tonight. This one meant a lot, as Tim from the Blatz Bombers works for the MPM (as does Paul, but he’s on the DL with a dislocated shoulder from a game a few weeks ago), so bragging rights were at stake. WInd was blowing out initially and the runs were flowing; we were up 11-10 at the three inning stretch. After the (beer) break we both settled down and we were up 14-10 going into the bottom of the 6th. We let up two runs but were able to hold on. As said before, this is far too much fun!

We’re now 4-0 with a hard-fought 9-5 victory over the Wiff the Balls last night. Shorthanded as usual – only four players instead of the allowed 5 – but it didn’t matter. We started off slowly with some sloppy defense and were down 5-2 after 3. I hit a 2-out 3-run homer in the top of the 4th to tie it, a solo shot in the 5th to put us ahead, and Brian “Spaceman” Podolski hit a two-run blast in the 6th to give us some breathing room. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the 6th with two out and their best hitter up; he hit a long foul ball that if it was 3 feet to the right would have been a grand slam but thanks to the lack of any bleachers (don’t they realize the vast audience potential for these games?) I was able to track it down. We’re just having way too much fun with this.

We also gained our first sort-of sponsor – Lela Boutique gave us logoed beer koozies for us to hold our beverages as we played. Not sure how many new customers they’ll get from it, though…

A hard-fought victory tonight, with a 2-1 win over the “Pat the Balls” (who comes up with these names?!!). Wind was blowing in strongly tonight, so several potential homers ended up as harmless pop flies; we had more success chopping the ball into the ground and legging it out. Hitting overall was fairly weak compared to last week, but our superlative pitching & defense carried us through.

We’re feelin’ it, though – compared to the other teams, we’re downright elderly – while they’re reaching for an MGD we’re looking for the Icy Hot. What we lack in agility we make up for in experience and guile…(plus, we drink better beer.)

The Thief Winos (composed of Phil and a few Thief friends) scored a rousing victory on Opening Day of the Milwaukee Wiffleball League, crushing the Dugout Drunks 15-5 at Hart Field in Tosa. We started off with an 8-run first inning (invoking the 8-run-per-inning mercy rule, otherwise it would have been far worse) before cruising into the third inning stretch (beer break at Leff’s Luckytown) and maintaining our dominance in the second half.

Great weather and lots of fun – looking forward to next week.
