There's no better way to learn about wine than tasting comparatively, talking about it while you're tasting it ("so that's why this wine tastes different than that!"), and hearing about the wine's background. (Plus, it's the most fun you'll ever have learning something.)

Piedmont's Other Reds: Barbera, Dolcetto, and More - Tuesday, August 4 (MPM) & Wednesday, August 5 (Shorewood)
Seatings at 6 & 7:30 p.m. at MPM; 6 & 8 p.m. at Shorewood
Piedmont is most known for its Nebbiolo, with Barolo and Barbaresco setting the world standard for the grape. However, it's more than a one-trick pony for reds (it also produces great whites, but that's a subject for another tasting), with outstanding wines made from Barbera, Dolcetto, and blends of the three. Barbera is among the most accessible of Italian reds, with loads of juicy berry fruit, while Dolcetto is a bit lighter bodied and with vibrant acidity; a great food wine. For this tasting we'll sample pure varietal examples of Dolcetto and Barbera at various quality levels and prices, along with a blend or two. The wines will be:

  • Marchesi di Barolo 2010 "Madonna di Como" Dolcetto d'Alba ($12.95)
  • Marziano Abbona 2012 "Papa Celso" Dolcetto d'Dogliani ($22.95)
  • Marchesi di Barolo 2011 "Ruvei" Barbera d'Alba
  • Aldo Conterno 2011 "Conca Tre Pile" Barbera d'Alba ($41.95)
  • Giuseppe Mascarello 2009 "Toetto" Freisa, Langhe ($25.95)
  • Pico Maccario 2012 "Cantamerli" Rosso, Monferrato ($15.95)

Cost of the tasting is $15 + tax. Seatings are at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at MPM and 6 & 8 p.m. at Shorewood. RSVPs are required; a credit card is required to secure your reservation. (If you call to cancel by 3 p.m. the day of the tasting, your card will not be charged. If you are on the wait list, we'll notify you by 3 p.m. if space has become available.) Email info@thiefwine.com or call us at 414.277.7707 (MPM) or 414.906.1906 (Shorewood) to RSVP.

Old World Classic Whites - Tuesday, August 18 (MPM) & Wednesday, August 19 (Shorewood)
Seatings at 6 & 7:30 p.m. at MPM; 6 & 8 p.m. at Shorewood
We'll jump around Europe for this tasting, exploring wines from France, such as delicious white Burgundy and a Sancerre; Germany, including a beautifully aged Riesling; Italy, with perhaps a minerally example from Alto Adige or a nutty Orvieto; and Spain, with possibly an Albarino or Viura. The wines will be all over the map (literally!) but will all be delicious, so please join us for an outstanding tasting! Wines TBD.

Shorewood Summer Spectacular - Sunday, August 23 (Shorewood)
We've been putting on our fantastic Spring and Fall Grand Tastings for a few years now upstairs at the Milwaukee Public Market, and last year launched our first Shorewood Summer Spectacular. It was so successful we're doing it again - so, please join us on Sunday, August 23 from 1 - 3 p.m. for our second annual Shorewood Summer Spectacular! Given the relaxed nature of August, this will be a casual walk-around tasting (at tables both inside the shop and outside in the courtyard) featuring 60+ great summer wines - crisp whites, dry rosÚs, sparklers, and lighter reds. All wines will be selected by Thief Wine and reflect our focus of artisanal, high-value, terroir-driven selections (i.e., not the mass-production wines you see at most large wine tastings). Light snacks (cheese, bread, crackers, etc.) will be provided. To ensure attendees have the best possible experience and prevent overcrowding, tickets are limited to 75 people. It should be a fantastic afternoon!

The tasting runs from 1 - 3 p.m.; cost is $45 and includes a Winestar crystal glass for you to keep. Advance purchase is required; email info@thiefwine.com, call us at 414.277.7707, or stop in to either Thief location to order your tickets. More details can be found here.
