There's no better way to learn about wine than tasting comparatively, talking about it while you're tasting it ("so that's why this wine tastes different than that!"), and hearing about the wine's background. (Plus, it's the most fun you'll ever have learning something.)

Red Wines of Piedmont: Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto - Tuesday, June 27 (MPM) & Wednesday, June 28 (Shorewood)
Seatings at 6 & 7:30 p.m. at MPM; 6 & 8 p.m. at Shorewood
Piedmont is most known for its Nebbiolo, with Barolo and Barbaresco setting the world standard for the grape. However, it's more than a one-trick pony for reds (it also produces great whites, but that's a subject for another tasting), with outstanding wines also made from Barbera and Dolcetto (and a few other local grapes, but we can't cover everything!). Nebbiolo is incredibly structured and ageworthy, Barbera is among the most accessible of Italian reds, with loads of juicy berry fruit, and Dolcetto is a bit lighter bodied and with vibrant acidity; a great food wine. For this tasting we'll sample and learn about two examples each of Piedmont's three classic red varietals, at various quality levels and prices. Wines TBD.

Cost of the tasting TBD. Seatings are at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at MPM and 6 & 8 p.m. at Shorewood. RSVPs are required; a credit card is required to secure your reservation. (If you call to cancel by 2 p.m. the day of the tasting, your card will not be charged. If you are on the wait list, we'll notify you by 2 p.m. if space has become available.) Seatings at 6 & 7:30 p.m. at MPM; 6 & 8 p.m. at Shorewood
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the world's most popular and widely grown white wines, with crisp acidity, citrus flavors, and an ability to flourish almost everywhere. Yet not all Sauvignon Blanc is created equal, and different regions produce wines with an exceptional diversity of flavors. For this tasting we'll explore Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand, France, California, and Chile to discover just how varied this wine can be. Wines TBD.

Shorewood Summer Spectacular - Sunday, August 20 (Shorewood)
We've been putting on our fantastic Spring and Fall Grand Tastings for several years now upstairs at the Milwaukee Public Market, and three years ago launched our Shorewood Summer Spectacular. It was so successful it's now an annual tradition - so, please join us on Sunday, August 20 from 1 - 3 p.m. for our fourth annual Shorewood Summer Spectacular!

Given the relaxed nature of August, this will be a casual walk-around tasting (at tables both inside the shop and outside in the courtyard) featuring 65+ great summer wines - crisp whites, dry rosés, sparklers, and lighter reds. All wines will be selected by Thief Wine and reflect our focus of artisanal, high-value, terroir-driven selections (i.e., not the mass-production wines you see at most large wine tastings). Light appetizers will be provided, and live music will enhance the atmosphere. To ensure attendees have the best possible experience and prevent overcrowding, tickets are limited to 75 people. It should be a fantastic afternoon!

The tasting runs from 1 - 3 p.m.; cost is $50 inclusive and includes a Riedel wine glass for you to keep. Advance purchase is required; email info@thiefwine.com, call us at 414.277.7707, or stop in to either Thief location to order your tickets. Check out more details here.

Exploring Malbec - Tuesday, August 22 (MPM) & Wednesday, August 23 (Shorewood)
Seatings at 6 & 7:30 p.m. at MPM; 6 & 8 p.m. at Shorewood
Malbec has been one of the most popular varietals in the shop since we opened eight years ago, and shows no signs of waning. It's full-bodied but with moderate tannins, abundant fruit but not overly jammy (at least in the good examples), and is generally an excellent value, For this tasting we'll sample through several wines from Argentina and France (the home of the grape) in a range of styles and prices - join us to explore the many facets of this grape!

If you are on the wait list, we'll notify you by 2 p.m. if space has become available.)
